About Canada
Entry Requirements & Visas
- Documents: Most international travelers need a valid passport and a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) if arriving by air. [1, 2]
- Assessments: Check your specific documentation needs using the online visitor tools provided by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). [1]
- Standard Stays: General tourist visits are typically allowed for up to 6 months per entry. [1]
Admission Requirements
- To travel to Canada, the entry requirements vary depending on your citizenship, legal residence, and method of travel.
- If you are a Nigerian citizen applying from Nigeria, you are required to obtain a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)—commonly known as a visitor visa—before your trip. You cannot enter Canada with just an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).
- 📋 Core Requirements for a Visitor Visa
- To qualify for a Canadian visitor visa, you must submit an online application through the IRCC Portal and provide the following documentation:
- • Valid Passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended travel dates.
- • Proof of Financial Support: Bank letters and detailed personal bank statements spanning the last 6 months. It is generally recommended to demonstrate a healthy balance (such as $5,000 CAD or more) to cover your stay.
- • Ties to Your Home Country: Strong evidence showing you intend to return to Nigeria, such as an employment letter, recent payslips, business registration documents (CAC), property ownership deeds, or family commitments.
- • Purpose of Travel & Itinerary: A statement of purpose letter outlining your travel plans, flight reservations, and hotel bookings.
- • Biometrics: A mandatory fee of $85 CAD is required to provide your fingerprints and a digital photo at a VFS Global Visa Application Centre (available in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt).
- • Application Fee: The standard visitor visa processing fee is $100 CAD.
- ✈️ Exemptions for US Citizens & Permanent Residents
- If your legal status is tied to the United States, Canada offers distinct entry exemptions:
- • U.S. Citizens: You do not need a visitor visa or an eTA for tourist stays under 180 days. You simply need a valid U.S. passport to cross the border.
- • U.S. Green Card Holders: Lawful permanent residents of the U.S. are visa-exempt and do not require an eTA. To enter, you must carry your valid Green Card (Form I-551) alongside a valid passport from your country of nationality.
- 🚨 Temporary Health Measures
- • Ebola Screening: Canada has temporary border health assessments in place for any traveler (including Canadian citizens) who has visited the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan within the past 21 days. This can include mandatory quarantine and is active through November 27, 2026.
- To give you the most accurate checklist, could you tell me:
- • What is your citizenship or current legal residency status?
- • What is the primary purpose of your trip (tourism, family visit, work, or study)?
- • When are you planning to travel?
